I must confess that I missed the blood drive on Feb. 12. However, thank you for reminding me to give this life-saving yet easy gift. Now that it's on my mind, I'm more likely to go give blood sooner rather than later.

Great Jen. Another future donor. I have done my part but I'm really glad I'm reminding others to do theirs. Sometimes it just takes a little reminder...

Best,

Awesome Ike. That is strange how you had that reaction. About the worse thing that happened to me was being maybe a little light-headed. But, after having something to eat, that went away quickly. I also try to hydrate while donating as well. That might help you out. There will be plenty of liquids, etc there to drink and eat. I'm glad you are going to consider giving. You can easily just go to redcrossblood.org and that is a page where you can locate the closest blood drive to you. Glad you're going to give!

Hi, Bob:

That was a thoughtful blog and made me recall why, after so many years of giving blood annually, I stopped. I have no conditions that would have prevented a donation and have never had any ill effects until then. After giving that last time, I very nearly passed out, a highly unsettling feeling for me. My primary care doctor has since said that such a reaction is rare and that I should consider giving again. After your blog, I will. It's still a very good act of public service, a small, personal and helpful thing that almost anyone can do.

A good reminder Bob, I haven't done this. I did go to years ago but wasn't able to as I had been to South America the year before (and they had to test for something before I could do it). I will do this, thanks for the reminder.

Hi Christine,
I hope you do review your position. Bring along a friend or relative and it will help you get through it. The only small amount of pain is a small pin prick from the needle and that is all. The people are great and they will put you at ease, especially if you are a newbie. I know you can do it.. :-)

Best,
Bob

I've never thought about giving blood, Bob. Or, more accurately, when I've thought about it, I've been a bit squeamish about it, and quickly dismissed it. Your post prompts me to review my position.

Thanks again and take care!

Hi Ruth,
I KNOW that you can do it and it won't be a problem. One thing I didn't talk about was the kind nature of the Red Cross employees who draw the blood. They are very understanding of nervousness, especially for first-timers. After the needle is in there is no discomfort at all. Even the needle prick is nothing to speak of so try not to be too concerned. I'm happy that this is on your list of goals as it should be for all of us. The experience is something that you will find that you will want to repeat over and over. I'd love to see a post on your blog after you make your first donation.

Best,
Bob

This is a really interesting post for me because giving blood is something I recently added to my list of goals to achieve this year. I really dread the thought of the needle, but I don't think I dread it enough to pass out from nervousness or anything like that - I just don't like the idea but know I will get over it. I just want to do something good. I love what you wrote about meeting other people there, that makes me want to do it even more.

Hi Ayo,
That is strange because I have felt no ill effects from donating. I agree about the lifesaver comment. I'm glad you mentioned about the O - blood being needed for Haiti victims. You can read about it here at the Red Cross site. I really wanted to include this info in the post. In fact I just may go back and add to it.

Best,
Bob
