Thanks for adding what you consider the other drawback to online learning. Maybe "self-teaching" could be considered a benefit as maybe instead of simply relying on the instructor for help we find other ways to get through it. Luckily I found my passion in marketing and made the effort to really reach out to my instructors for more information. You can definitely tell by looking at my transcripts which courses I had to take versus the ones I really loved. While face-to-face students can feel this as well, distance learning certainly amplifies the potential for problems. I had a great online experience with my undergraduate studies that I stayed on with the same university for my masters program...also online. But, there could be circumstances which don't allow a person to do so like caring for a family, etc. Maybe the person is a shut-in with no means of physically going to a college but wants to further their education. It all depends on the circumstances but, for a first degree, my recommendation is to be a part of the college scene. After that I think an online education makes a whole lot of sense.
