So you’ve just dropped off your child at college for the first time and are feeling the pain. That final hug was a lot more difficult than you had originally expected. Your first-born is now among people you do not know, in a completely foreign environment, and you feel the anxiety and feel helpless as a parent. My eldest daughter left for college for the first time last August. The trauma of her exodus was detailed in this post. Ironically, today we just returned from bringing her back to college after her 5-week holiday break at home. Let’s just say that it was a whole lot easier dropping her off this time. For those of you who have already gone through this college separation anxiety, congratulations on dealing with it and moving onto another phase of your lives. After having gone through this heart-wrenching experience, I think I can help out my fellow brethren deal with being separated from their child for possibly the first time. There are certainly ways to deal with anxiety to make this transition easier, for both you, and your child.

1. Communicate, but give them space.

Buy only enough coffee to last a week or two. There might be a great deal if you buy in bulk, but by the time you get around to using that coffee it’s going to be stale, even if you buy whole beans you’ll be able to taste the difference after two weeks.

Step 3

Use better water. Most tap water contains some sort of minerals or chemicals that aren’t harmful to you, but can be harmful to your coffee. They can change the flavor of your coffee and not in the good way. You can buy a Brita pitcher or a water filter for a faucet for relatively cheap. Plus, you’ll be able to use it for more than just your morning brew.

Step 4

Use two scoops of coffee per cup of water you put into the coffee maker. For some people that might be too strong, but it’s what’s recommended by the experts. Normally, I don’t agree with the coffee snobs, but this time they’re on to something. Try two scoops first, then adjust it your preferences. The majority of people make their coffee so weak that you can practically see through it, missing out on a lot of the great flavors. A single cup coffee maker is a great option for a single person or if you wake up earlier than everyone else to head off to work.

Step 5

Try new coffees. If you like your coffee strong, try some dark roasts. If you’re on the other side of the spectrum, check out some flavored coffees or coffees from Africa. There’s great coffees from counties like Ethiopia that have taste almost wine-like and very easy to drink for fans of lighter roasts.

Step 6

Just for me, try your coffee without any sugar, milk or creamer. I discovered that with fresh coffee, I didn’t need hide the taste with sweeteners and artificial flavors.

Step 7

Store your extra coffee beans in something that’s air tight, out of light and in a cool dry spot. Air, heat and water are good ways to ruin coffee quickly, so after you open up the bag, put the extra coffee into an air tight canister.

There’s so much more that can be done to get better tasting coffee, but start with these tips and you’ll see a huge difference tomorrow morning.

This guest article was written by Mike Crimmins. He is the caffeinated blogger behind Daily Shot Of Coffee, a blog for the average joe coffee drinker.
In this post I am going to focus on maintaining your automobile and machinery and appliances you may use outside of your home.

It is my guess that your second biggest investment behind your house is probably your car. That is, unless you have children who are in college. Maintaining my car is very high on my list since I’m always trying to steer clear of car-repair bills. You know you are going to get them but there are ways you can avoid or delay them.

Primp your ride.

Oil and Filter

I tend to keep my vehicles longer than most people. In fact, my last car had gone over 220,000 miles before it basically rusted out and I was forced to buy another car. I think I got everything out of that car that I could have. When it got older I made sure I changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles. Tom and Ray of CarTalk, a syndicated radio program, recommend changing your oil every 5000 miles. I think it makes sense that the older a car and an engine gets, it probably makes sense to change the oil more regularly than a new vehicle.

Air Filter, Fuel Filter

Two more filters which should be changed regularly are the air filter and the fuel filter. Edmunds, the highly popular online car website, recommends changing your fuel filter every 24,000 miles and your air filter every 12,000 miles.

Tires

I tend to purchase my tires at a discount tire store rather than at my dealer or at one of the large tire chains. Right there you will be saving money. But, there is one thing that you must have done when you have the new tires put on. That one thing is an alignment. If you don’t ensure that your front and rear end is in alignment then your tires will start to chop (or wear improperly) and, as a result, the life of your tires will be reduced drastically. Obviously you also want to make sure the tires are balanced when they are put on your car but that is a typical procedure. Not all tire stores will have the proper machinery for an alignment so it is imperative for you to immediately go and have an alignment done or checked at a fully-equipped service station.

Yard Machine Maintenance

My yard is very important to me and so are the machines that I utilize to maintain that yard. Let me get this straight right off the bat, I am not a mechanical wizard at all. I try my best to learn about my lawn equipment and try to maintain them as well as I am able to. If I need help I will seek out the proper resources.

Stabilize your stuff.

As far as maintenance is concerned, I’ve found it is extremely important to read the manual and follow the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance plan. For example, it is important that at the end of each season you either remove the gas from your lawn equipment or utilize a stabilizer in the tank during the off-season. The latest school of thought is to leave the tank full and add stabilizer. Keeping the tank full of gas, including stabilizer, will reduce the amount of moisture that could form in the tank. This is what I do with my lawnmower and my snowblower at the end of each season. It is also recommended that after you add the stabilizer to the gas you should run the engine for a few minutes to allow the gas to circulate through the gas line.

As far as my small machinery such as my chainsaw, weed wacker, and leaf blower are concerned, you can follow the same procedure. The website eHow includes a video on storing a gas-powered leaf blower for the winter. This video also recommends leaving the gas in the tank and adding stabilizer.

Regular oil and filter changes.

Other regular maintenance on your outside machinery should include regular oil changes, air and fuel filter changes, and keeping your equipment clean. One tool that I have found to be extremely helpful for oil changes with my 52″ landscaping mower is an oil extractor. The one shown in this link is the exact model I purchased. It allows you to pump the oil out of the mower which could avoid a terrible mess that could arise from removing the oil the conventional way.

Grease is good.

Another regular maintenance activity you should conduct on your outside machinery is greasing. A lawn tractor and snowblower come with a number of grease fittings found at various locations. Review your manual for the exact locations and use a grease gun to pump grease into the fittings until the grease starts to slightly overflow. Then you can remove the excess grease with a rag. Lubrication is a key maintenance activity you should perform at least once a season. And don’t go cheap with the grease gun because a decent one should last you a lifetime.

I hope these two posts have been somewhat informational as far as using maintenance to avoid costly bills. Financial management should be a top priority in your life as it is in mine and maintenance is a big factor. If you have other suggestions please feel free to leave them in the comments section.

If you are anything like me, it’s the out-of-the-blue, unplanned, expenses that really kill your budget. Financial management is very important in our lives. You know, going in, your regularly-scheduled payments like your monthly mortgage bill, utility bills, and car payments. But it’s the blown head gasket, the dryer breaking down, or the furnace acting up that are unexpected expenses that can wreak havoc on your checkbook, your savings account, or your credit card balance.

So what can we do to avoid these budget-busting bills that always seem to crop up out of left field? In a word: “Maintain”. I am a fanatic when it comes to maintaining what I own. Trying to stay ahead of those big bills is my motivation for meticulous maintenance. This post will focus on maintaining inside your home and my next post will focus on outside maintenance activities that could save you big dollars in the long run.

Filters are your friends.

Think about your appliances at home and there is a decent chance that some of them have filters that need regular attention. Filters are used to remove particles that can restrict airflow and reduce the efficiency of an appliance and to prevent dust and dirt from getting to the motor. Neglecting the maintenance of a filter could reduce the life of that appliance which could result in an unexpected bill. Here is a list of some appliances that have filters.

Air Cleaner, Vacuum Cleaner

Just the nature of these appliances screams filter. Air filters remove impurities from the air such as smoke, pet hair, and dust. HEPA® (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are found in many of the air cleaners and vacuum cleaners out there on the market today. According to Wikipedia HEPA filters, by definition, remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles. They are expensive to replace but you should follow the manufacturer’s recommended replacement policy. If you don’t, you could be in for a bill that you’re not expecting. You must factor into your yearly budget the cost of these filters and make the swap when recommended.

Air Conditioner

With the drastic reduction in recent years of the price of air conditioners, almost everyone has one or many in their homes. I have four of them myself, including one in each bedroom. If you want these appliances to last, you have to clean the filter. Read the manual when you purchase it and find out where it is located. It typically just pulls out and to clean it you can run it under some hot water and clean it by hand. It takes a good couple of minutes to do but it will help make your air conditioner last. Obviously the more you run the air conditioner the more you should clean the filter. I try to clean the filters when I put them in each year and check them every week or so. It is something very easy to do but oftentimes these filters, since they are not visible, get overlooked.

Dryer

Your dryer has a filter called a lint trap. Failure to regularly clean the lint trap could result in dryer malfunctions, higher energy costs, and, more importantly, a home fire. I have found that if we neglect to clean the lint trap, the dryer will run much hotter than usual which is a potential fire hazard. This one is simple. Just clean the lint trap before or after each time you use the dryer. Once in a while I will actually use a vacuum cleaner and clean out where the lint trap is seated. Also, assuming your dryer vents outside, you may have a plastic vent trap outside your house. If our dryer is running hot I will always go outside and check out the vent trap and clean it out.

Furnace Maintenance

Within the past year we had to change our furnace. Anyone who has gone through a major overhaul in their heating system knows how expensive furnace-related costs can be. Maintaining your furnace regularly is not expensive but it can save you from that big bill that you simply can’t plan for. Each year we have our furnace cleaned and serviced. It may run you a couple hundred dollars or so each year but, if you neglect this type of service, you can be sure you’ll be in for a much larger furnace bill.

Fireplace Maintenance

Oftentimes I’ve been called a pyro due to my love of fires. But I’m talking about fires in my fireplace at home. Before we purchased our house the home inspection revealed a crack in the flu. As a result, the existing owners had to pay for a brand new chimney before we purchased the home. I can’t remember the exact cost but it was over $10K and that was twenty years ago. So, I make it a point to have our chimney cleaned either before or after each winter season. If you use a wood stove to heat your home you may want to have your chimney checked and cleaned more often. One tip I have learned from our chimney sweep is to use a Creosote Sweeping Log to keep our chimney’s flu clean. He suggested cutting the log into three pieces placing a piece of each log into a roaring fire each month. I used a chop saw to cut it equally into three pieces. This maintenance tip should certainly help prolong the life of your chimney and prevent any unnecessary large bills related to your chimney.

This post hopefully added a few practical suggestions and recommendations for maintaining some of your inside appliances and fixtures in your home. Avoiding high-cost replacement items is the financial management motivation for these maintenance activities. My next post will focus on outside maintenance. Until then…

There is something about the spring and the fall that triggers a cleansing gene. If you live in a harsh climate, the spring is relegated to cleanup from the winter. The coolness of the fall invigorates the body and mind to work on projects before the winter bears down.

Removing clutter, organizing, and upgrading is the pattern of how this cleansing process unfolds.

DeClutter

Whether it is in your space at work, or in your home, there are areas that you occupy that have clutter. Dictionary.com defines the noun clutter as a “disorderly heap or assemblage; litter“. However it’s defined, you know it when you see it. Removing clutter at work and home can be very gratifying.

Remove virtual clutter from your computer desktop.

I like to have a simple background on my screen and if it is cluttered with unused icons I definitely think it can have a negative effect on my work.

Regularly clean your actual desktop.

Clutter runs rampant on many an actual desktop in the workplace. By maintaining a clean work surface, the ability to focus on your “big rocks” list becomes that much easier.

Closet Maintenance

Take a morning or an afternoon and make a decision to either keep that shirt or bag it and give it to Goodwill. You may even have enough for a decent charitable donation to deduct on your taxes this year.

Tend to the kitchen cabinets, drawers, and countertops.

If there is one place in your home that will accumulate more unused product than any other it’s your kitchen cabinets. Clearing them out and cleaning up may also give you a chance to potentially eat, and not waste, those groceries that you bought some time ago but are still within their expiration date. You can also pick up some kitchen cabinet organizers which will help you organize the contents of your cabinets. And if your kitchen drawers are also full of clutter then dumping them out and adding some kitchen drawer organizers will help you find whatever you need whenever you need it. Clearing off your kitchen countertops will also go a long way toward a more organized kitchen and picking up some simple storage solutions such as kitchen canister sets and a kitchen utensil holder will help you easily access those often-used dry ingredients and kitchen utensils.

Organize

Merriam-Webster online defines the word organize as “to form into a coherent unity or functioning whole“. After you declutter the next step is to organize. Being an avid woodworker I like to organize my shop so that I will always know where my tools will be the next time I need them.

Paper can still be your organizing choice.

With the advent of “everything electronic”, the use of a simple day timer is still the choice of many to stay organized. Every time I work on or complete a task, I write it on the printed calendar to track my hours. At the end of each day my hourly project work is transferred from the printed paper into a project tracking software.

Hanging files.

There are so many products today for organizing the workplace but one, in particular, is hanging files. There are also versions of the hanging files that will sit on the desktop but, the way I look at it, why not use the real estate of the walls of your cubicle or office instead of adding more clutter to your desktop.

Your walls can be your friend.

If you have a basement room that you cannot walk in, simply put up shelves on a couple of walls by buying adjustable shelf brackets from your local big box store. You can use some old planks that you have lying around the house for the shelves or have them cut to size at the same big box store. Organize everything that was on the floor onto the shelves and you have room to walk and a room that you can actually use now.

Use the space behind the door.

One of the most unique uses of space I have seen used in my own home is a behind the door storage unit. It basically converted a hall closet into a pantry. Try it! You will be amazed at the added storage you now have at very little cost.

Upgrade

Making small improvements in both your workplace and your home in the form of upgrades can certainly be beneficial to your life.

Purchase a headset.

One of the most liberating purchases at work that I have made in the past year is adding a headset to my phone. The headset has given me the ability to have my hands available to conduct a training session or to give a presentation over the internet. They are not expensive and your company should have no problem springing for it.

Comfortable seating.

According to Dictionary.com the term ergonomics is “the applied science of equipment design, as for the workplace, intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort“. In recent years companies have placed particular emphasis on ergonomics in the workplace. An upgrade to your work chair such as a reclining office chair could alleviate or eliminate any back-related injuries and, chances are, your company will pay to keep you healthy.

Paint a room.

One of the cheapest upgrades you can make in your home or apartment is to paint a room. You can completely transform the look and feel of a room with a gallon or two of paint for about $50 total. Apart from the esthetic change in the room, you will feel

great knowing that you did this yourself and for a small amount of money and some sweat equity.

Purchase a slow cooker.

Another great purchase that we made in our home within the past year is a slow cooker. In this day and age where time is precious and limited, a slow cooker is a great time saver. It allows you to create a meal ahead of time and it will cook throughout the day whether you are home or not. The meals that you can cook with a slow cooker are unlimited. We tend to have chili, stews, and pulled pork with our slow cooker. There are a myriad of cookbooks specifically written for slow cookers. You not only can let it cook unattended but it also fills your house with an aroma that makes it so nice to come home to.

No matter what the season, cleaning up, removing clutter, organizing, and upgrading can be your steps toward cleansing your space as well as your mind.
